Waste, Trash and Recycling in Edmond, Oklahoma

0

Here are answers to common questions about garbage collection, bulk collection, schedules, and recycling in the metropolitan community of Edmond in OKC.

Does the city provide cars?

Yes. If you live within the Edmond city limits, there will be a charge on your monthly utility bill that covers a 105 gallon garbage cart, which can hold up to 200 pounds of garbage. Trash that does not fit in the cart can only be placed in city-coded trash bags. These 30 pound bags can be purchased in packages of 10 at the Customer Service Center (1st Street and Littler Avenue) or at various Wal-Marts, Homelands and Westlake Ace stores in the Edmond area.

What happens if I fill my trash cart on a regular basis?

It may not be worth buying additional city-coded bags each month if you regularly have more trash than the cart can hold. In that case, you’ll want to get a second cart for a small additional charge.

When is my weekly garbage collection?

Here is the pick up time:

  • Monday – Places between the Memorial and the 15th from Santa Fe to Coltrane
  • Tuesday : locations between Memorial and 15 from Coltrane to Sooner AND locations between Memorial and 33 from Sooner to Douglas
  • Wednesday – Places between the 15th and 2nd from Western to Coltrane
  • Thursday : locations between 2nd and Danforth from Western to Midwest Boulevard AND locations between 33rd and Danforth between Midwest Boulevard and Choctaw Road
  • Friday : locations 15-2 Coltrane to Midwest Boulevard AND locations 33-15 Sooner to Midwest Boulevard AND locations north of Covell

Edmond requests that city-coded cars and / or bags be placed on the sidewalk, with handles facing the house, at 7 am on the morning of the retreat. Allow at least four feet of clearance around the cart, as trucks use robotic arms.

What about hazardous materials?

These should not be placed on the curb for collection. Items such as paints, oil, corrosive solvents, pool chemicals, or pesticides in the cart can be dropped off (for a fee) at the Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) collection facility located at SW 15th and Portland. Bring your driver’s license and a copy of your current City of Edmond utility statement as proof of residency.
In addition, Edmond offers one home pickup day per calendar year for hazardous waste AND electronic waste (televisions, VCRs, etc.). All you have to do is call the hotline at (800) 449-7587 to schedule.

You will receive a collection kit and instructions.

I need something big picked up. What should I do?

Edmond offers (for a fee) up to 12 bulk pickups per calendar year. To dispose of a large item, contact Waste Services for an exact pickup date and charge, which is based on the size of the item (s). Overall, bulk picking for the southeastern portion of Edmond is the first week of the month, followed by the southwest in the second week, the northwest in the third, and the northeast in the fourth.

What if I can’t wait for the bulk collection day?

No problem. Just drop off your items at the Edmond Transfer Station at 5300 Recycle Trail, outside Air Depot, just north of Covell Road. It’s actually about half the cost of picking them up, but you’ll need to bring your driver’s license and a City of Edmond utility bill to receive the discounted rate.

What about vacation pickup?

No pickup on the following days: Memorial Day, July 4, Labor Day, the day before Thanksgiving, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. In general, holidays simply delay the schedule one day for the rest of the week.

Does Edmond provide recycling services?

Yes. You can get an 18 gallon recycle bin at the curb and the recycling pickup is the same day as your trash pickup, although it’s a different truck picking it up. Edmond accepts several common recyclable materials, such as plastic milk, food or beverage containers, aluminum cans, glass jars and bottles, and newspapers / magazines / phone books.
