Storm summer in Germany: what will the weather be like in August?

In July the weather got even more extreme. Heavy rain caused floods and flooding, especially in the west of Germany. In the middle of the month there was a brief relaxation, but the rest of July will continue wet according to the forecasts of the meteorologists. So the hope for summer weather rests on August.

The last summer month was quite hot, at least in the past few years. A long heat wave in 2020 caused extremely warm weather in Germany. In August 2019, at least the last third of the month brought heat again. But for August 2021 the trend is rather sobering – despite the dog days *.

Weather in Germany: will it be summer again in August?

Dog days are from July 23rd to August 23rd and traditionally represent the hottest time of the year. “But even they don’t seem to want to look really hot and beautiful this year,” explains meteorologist Dominik Jung * from the Q.met weather service to wetter.net. Instead, things are more changeable with more thunderstorms. “The storm potential remains quite high,” warns Jung.

This trend for August is also reflected in the leading weather models *. The long-term model of the American Weather Service (NOAA) calculates a month that is too wet. It doesn’t look like heat here. The temperatures are rather average. “Doesn’t really speak for many, dry, hot summer days,” explains Corinna Borau from wetter.com. But the calculation should be treated with caution. A lot can still change. In addition, according to Borau, the NOAA model did not react very well to the extremes of the weather this year.

With the European model (ECMWF), on the other hand, the weather looks a little more promising for August and still gives a little hope of a summer comeback. It shows an August that is too warm – and that in all of Germany. But even here it looks more wet than dry. A lot of rain could come down again, especially in the south-eastern half of Germany. “So it could go on in a more changeable way with an ups and downs”, says Borau. A stable summer looks different.
