What is the largest dead zone on the planet?

0

Currently, all experts agree that human activity is the cause of global warming, which translates into increasingly extreme weather conditions and environmental degradation.

Proof of this is what we can expose as the "greatest dead zone" on the planet.

Where is it located?

The largest dead zone on Earth is in the Gulf of Oman, in a 181,000-square-kilometer stretch of sea between Oman and Iran. Its characteristic is that it is the largest minimum oxygen zone or "dead zone".

Here, oxygen concentrations are typically less than 6 micromoles per kilogram throughout the area ; a far cry from the 120 micromoles per kilogram required for the survival of many life forms. Although it is true that this area has been characterized as an oxygen minimum zone (OMZ), since 1990 it has grown and intensified due to the warming of the seas.

What has caused the increase in this dead zone?

A large decline in biodiversity, which has allowed the proliferation of huge formations of algae.
