White mountains, smooth roads – January stays cool

With snow, ice and cool temperatures, it is wintry in Germany. Skiers and tobogganers should be happy. On the streets, however, the weather sometimes causes chaos.

Straubing/Hartenstein – Winter weather in Germany: Fresh snow lured sledders and skiers to the slopes in some places at the weekend, while slippery roads made things difficult for motorists.

But if you are hoping for some sun after the rather cloudy days, you have to be patient. It remains not very friendly until well into the week. A tentative change could only come on Thursday – but it will not be sunny or even spring-like. “The last days of January are windy and sometimes wet, with similar temperatures,” said a meteorologist from the German Weather Service (DWD) in Offenbach.

In the Ore Mountains and the Eastern Alps there could still be some snow above 600 to 800 meters. In the extreme south-west, the sun appears from time to time, especially on Tuesday.

Mirror-smooth roads and accidents

Many people use the opportunity for winter sports at the weekend, for example in the Ore Mountains. The webcams in Oberwiesenthal showed numerous skiers on the slopes of the Fichtelberg. Things were professional in the Black Forest: Ski jumper Karl Geiger won the home World Cup in Titisee-Neustadt.

Meanwhile, the weather caused some accidents on the roads. In Bavaria, three people were injured in traffic accidents near Straubing on Saturday night. According to a police spokesman, the reason for this was the weather: “It’s slippery here, sometimes the trucks are hanging.” Also in Bavaria, a truck slipped from the A9 into a ditch. The driver was not injured.

In Saxony, four people were injured in an accident on the A72. When changing to the left lane, a trailer truck collided with the loaded transport trailer of a car on Friday afternoon, the police said. In a head-on collision not far from there, three people were injured – two of them seriously. A 24-year-old had got into the oncoming lane in Hartenstein-Thierfeld (Zwickau district) with his car due to slippery roads, the police said. dpa
