Spaniards still consider Valentine’s Day an excellent time to express what they feel and make a gift to their partners, it is for this reason that, according to data from Bankinter Consumer Finance , global consumption by credit card in items such as flowers, cosmetics, perfumery and luxury increased about 105% that day, compared to spending on any other day in February.

But it is men who change their shopping habits the most to give gifts to their partners , so that their spending on these types of products during these dates increases by 165%, while in global consumption by women increases 28%.

These are data derived from an analysis carried out by Bankinter Consumer Finance based on the purchasing habits of its bankintercard credit card users. The study also shows that the average cost of gifts for Valentine’s Day that Spaniards make is 63 euros ( 65 euros for men and 59 euros for women ). Similarly, card spending in restaurants on February 14 increased by 42% in relation to spending on a similar day of the week of that month other than Valentine’s.

Luxury love

In the days before Valentine’s Day, the volume of spending on purchases of luxury items with a credit card tripled (202%) compared to the rest of February. The average amount of luxury items that are given for Valentine’s Day paid by card is 106 euros per person. However, this is a trend that has been decreasing in the last 4 years, for this year 2017 it is expected that the average luxury shopping expense around Valentine’s Day will be 98 euros per person. It should be noted that men who give luxury items on those dates spend on average 41% more per person than women.

Say it with flowers

On February 14 alone, card spending on flowers increased 174% compared to the daily average for the month. Men tripled spending on flowers on these dates (206% increase), while the increase in global spending by women was 47%. The average amount of payment made by those who give flowers is 47 euros per person.

Beauty and personal care

There are many Spaniards who also choose cosmetic, perfumery and personal care products as Valentine’s Day gifts , in this way global spending on these dates increases by 57%, especially on February 13, which is when purchases are most concentrated of this type of article. Specifically, the average global spending of men increased by 90%, compared to 30% of women, who changed their shopping habits to a lesser degree.In general, the average amount of cosmetics and perfumery gifts on Valentine’s Day It is 54 euros per person (52 euros for men and 56 euros for women)
