Since the hybrid era began in Formula 1 back in 2014, Mercedes has dominated the highest category of motorsport with an iron hand. An example of this have been the eight consecutive constructors’ titles and the seven out of eight conquests in the drivers’ championship.

Throughout all these years Mercedes has written her name in gold letters in the history books with a command that has surpassed any record.

At the moment, the silver bullets are the third team (tied with McLaren) with the most constructors’ titles, the third with the most victories with 124, the third with the most pole positions with 135 and the fourth with the most podiums at the time. throughout history.

However, from 2021 Formula 1 introduced a new budget cap in an attempt to equalize the grid as much as possible and minimize team expenses. Said cost cap will decrease over the years, in fact, in 2022 it will be reduced by $5 million (almost 4.5M euros) and will drop to $140 million in total (a little less than 125M euros).

According to Mercedes boss Toto Wolff , thanks to these new monetary restrictions and also new regulations coming in 2022, smaller teams will have the opportunity to compete for bigger goals.

“Of course, the teams with more money are not particularly happy about the loss of that money advantage,” Wolf told Auto Motor und Sport . “Before the introduction of the restrictions, everything looked like a race between Mercedes , Red Bull and Ferrari, but now everything will be much more balanced.

“I think there are five or six teams that can win in the future. That’s good for the category. As we all know, the cars will be very similar from now on. Yes, there may still be differences in the first year, but things little by little, there will be no more teams that can distance themselves in a second from the rest”, concluded the Austrian.
