Women scientists, success from the shadows

0

For centuries, dozens of brilliant minds of women were silenced because of their gender status. However, many of the great discoveries of science were and are the work of them.

Despite the fact that discrimination against women raged in all areas, social, political, personal … One of the most discriminatory fields has been science . Unfortunately, hundreds of women have been marginalized, mocked, ignored, hidden, and even tortured in pursuit of this.

Male minds, traditionally, took the merits of great research and signed the great achievements of scientific and technological evolution (as well as those of any field). It is surprising to discover the number of women who have had to endure, from the shadows, the recognition of their work stolen or expropriated by a man .

Fortunately, more and more force is being made to make visible the role of the female sex in science. However, even today female scientists have difficulty seeing their work recognized as equitable with their male colleagues. One of these examples is the glass ceiling: science is carried out, for the most part, by women, although the positions of responsibility are mostly occupied by men.

February 11 is therefore the International Day of Women and Girls in Science . It was in 2015 when the United Nations General Assembly decided to proclaim this date in recognition of the key role that the female gender plays in the scientific and technological community.

With this fact of global importance, it also pursues the objective of supporting women scientists , promoting the access of women and girls to education, training and research in science, technology, engineering and mathematics and, most importantly, encourage their participation in these activities .

Thanks to the tireless struggle of our ancestors, today we can enjoy fundamental rights such as contribution to public life or access to fair education, but the reality is that equality is still a challenge to be achieved . In the 21st century, discriminatory laws against women and girls still persist in all corners of the world.

We want to pay a small tribute with this gallery to all those scientists who have lived in anonymity and who, without them, the evolution of science would not have been the same . In addition, at the end we include a small selection of the most renowned Spanish scientists today.
