A World War II bomb was discovered during construction work in downtown Göttingen. Around 20,000 people had to be evacuated.

Göttingen – A World War II bomb was detonated in a controlled manner in Göttingen early on Friday morning. The city administration announced that there was no damage.

Because of the dud, large parts of the city center were evacuated within 1000 meters of the site, around 20,000 people had to be brought to safety. Even trains did not stop at the main station of the Lower Saxony city for several hours.

The 500 kilogram bomb from the Second World War was found on Thursday morning at the Weender Tor in the city center. dpa
