The American company Wyndham Hotels & Resorts will open its multi-brand complex in La Condesa, in Mexico City, in January 2022, after postponing its opening due to the COVID-19 pandemic. With two hotels and six consumption centers, the hotel chain seeks to go through the corporate and life & style segment, with a view to recovering quickly from the crisis that the sector is going through, which has been accentuated in urban destinations.

With an investment of 100 million dollars by Grupo Murano, the complex will house the Wyndham Grand Mexico City brands, focused on the corporate and business segment, and Esplendor by Wyndham La Condesa, oriented to the life & style market, which together they will cover 408 rooms distributed in 7,500 square meters.

Antonio Álvarez, general director of the complex, considers that beyond the crisis that has affected the entire hotel sector –and the tourism industry in general–, conditions in Mexico City remain promising for both segments, relying on the location of the complex and the dynamism of the market.

“We believe that by 2022 the market will have evolved a lot. There will be many more travelers willing to leave after being locked up. We see a major change from the United States since they have done a good job with vaccination, we see it very optimistic, “he says in an interview.

The new Wyndham complex is the result of the reconversion of the Hotel Aristos, a complex built in the 1960s that has been cataloged by the National Institute of Fine Arts (INBA) for its artistic value, and that was designed by the architect Spanish José Luis Benlliure.

Three years ago, Wyndham and Grupo Murano announced their intention to remodel the complex, which offers a unique opportunity in terms of space, says Álvarez, as it has three buildings that will accommodate an event room for 1,000 people, and six conference centers. consumption with which the company plans to turn the complex into a key meeting point in the city.

The opening of the hotel has been delayed several times. The COVID-19 pandemic postponed its start of operations from August 2020 to March of this year, and later it was expected that it would be operating by autumn. With the opening in January 2022, its start-up would accumulate a delay of 16 months.

Although the pandemic has particularly impacted the hotel sector in city destinations, the executive says that Wyndham is already evaluating other resorts in this and other markets. “At Wyndham we have full confidence in Mexico. There will be new brands for Mexico City, we have a large presence in Mexico in franchised hotels, but there are several projects that are going to be announced ”.
