After an accident: the Rhine remains closed for the time being

The Rhine near Karlsruhe remains closed for a distance of 30 kilometers. An excursion ship and a tanker got stuck at the beginning of the week, among other things because of the low water level.

Hagenbach – Shipping on the Rhine remains blocked for the time being after the accident of two ships near Karlsruhe. A spokesman for the Upper Rhine Waterways and Shipping Office in Mannheim said on Wednesday that the company is working at full speed, and an external company has also been commissioned.

It is so far unclear when the route can be opened again.

An excursion ship and a tanker got stuck at the beginning of the week, among other things because of the low water level near Hagenbach – located on the Rhineland-Palatinate side opposite Karlsruhe. It is true that they could be freed. But according to the spokesman, up to 60 centimeters high piles of gravel were created by the ship’s propellers, which would now have to be dredged to prevent other ships from getting stuck.
