AT&T Mexico announced that by the summer of this year its 5G technology will have coverage in Mexico City, Guadalajara and Monterrey, mainly in urban and industrial cities.

In December of last year, the company chaired by Mónica Aspe officially launched its first 5G tests in CDMX: in the Diana Tower and in the Napoles neighborhood, where it enabled 50 mobile devices so that they can connect to said networks.
The directive assured that the fifth generation in networks is not just about implementing a technology, but the possibility for Mexico to be more competitive worldwide, since it will allow the development of an entrepreneurial ecosystem that will help close the social, economic and digital gaps that still holds the country.
“If Mexico wants to maintain and grow as a player in the global economic context in the future, it has to work on developing an environment that exploits the benefits of 5G,” said the directive.
In this sense, Rodríguez pointed out that an ecosystem is necessary to promote innovation, including public policies to generate competition and investment, since 5G will require 30% more investment than what the company injected to develop 4G.
And it is that the company recognized that the main challenges are: the high cost of the spectrum and the high concentration of the market.
For his part, Héctor Marín, senior director of government affairs at Qualcomm Mexico, explained that another challenge faced by telecommunications operators is the lack of homologation of permits to deploy infrastructure, therefore, he urged coordination of the three levels of government ( state, municipal and local) so that the installation of infrastructure can be speeded up.

“There must be coordination at the three levels of government, for the installation of sites and wireless technologies that require sites, for radio bases, antennas that transmit through the spectrum and these sites sometimes have to meet requirements that are at the federal, state and local levels and many municipalities in our country have different requirements to install, some charge others not, it is not standardized and this creates many challenges when an operator wants to implement this technology”, explained Marín.
