According to initial investigations, the kangaroos – including two young animals – could have been deliberately killed. The police evaluate, among other things, recordings from surveillance cameras.

Sydney – Police are investigating after 14 dead kangaroos have been found in the Australian state of New South Wales.

According to initial investigations, the animals could have been deliberately killed, the officials said. They had opened an investigation into an alleged act of cruelty towards animals.

First, police officers found five dead adult kangaroos and one dead cub on Saturday in the Long Beach area, about 270 kilometers south of Sydney. Seven other dead animals and a dead kangaroo cub were later discovered in the nearby area of Maloney’s Beach, it said.

The officials questioned witnesses and evaluated footage from surveillance cameras in the area. In Australia, native animals – i.e. those that were found there before humans were colonized – are under special protection. dpa
