The corona numbers are rising again for the eighth day in a row. The RKI reports: Young people in particular are currently becoming infected more and more frequently. The news ticker.

  • The corona numbers in Germany have been increasing every day for more than a week: the incidence is 7.1.
  • Federal President Steinmeier publishes a video message with an urgent vaccination appeal (see update from July 14, 12.20 p.m.).
  • The RKI reports: Young people in particular are currently infected frequently (see update from July 14th, 1:15 p.m.).

Update from July 14th, 1:15 p.m.: It should be a relaxed summer during the corona pandemic and the comparatively low values in the past few weeks had already given experts confidence. However, the number of new infections has been increasing again for days (see original report below). As the RKI now reports, the slight increase in the numbers and the seven-day incidence is mainly due to young adults.

While the number of cases per 100,000 inhabitants within seven days in almost all age groups developed roughly constant or declined over several weeks, they increased among 20 to 29-year-olds, especially in the past week. The trend is clearest among 20- to 24-year-olds, with the seven-day incidence increasing from 10 to 19 within two weeks. For comparison: For seniors between 75 and 84 years of age, the value stagnated at 1 in the same period.

But the RKI also sees a slight increase in corona infections brought in from abroad. In the past two weeks in particular, there has been a slight increase in such cases of infection, according to the RKI in its management report on Tuesday evening. At the moment, however, this is “still at a low level”. The weekly number of cases in connection with travel was 555 last week, in the weeks before it had fluctuated between 259 and 412 cases. In its report, the RKI does not provide any information on the countries from which infected people entered, nor does the report differentiate between variants.

Corona in Germany: vaccination campaign comes to a standstill

Update from July 14th, 12.20 p.m.: The corona numbers have been rising again for days (see original report), but the number of vaccinated people is not rising as quickly as many politicians and experts had hoped. Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier has therefore called on people to get vaccinated against the corona virus. “The majority in our country has already received the first vaccination,” said the head of state in a video message published on Wednesday. “Now it is important that as many as possible follow your example.” Therefore he asks all those who are still unsure: “Get vaccinated!”

“Let’s not let up!” Said Steinmeier, looking at the faltering vaccination campaign. “The common goal will only be achieved if more people in our country have received full vaccination protection.” Only then would virus variants such as the current Delta variant not force new restrictions. Only then is there a high degree of certainty that there is protection against severe and fatal courses of the infection.

The vaccination campaign has slowed down significantly at the moment, which is why the quota of those vaccinated is only increasing slowly at the moment. Around 43 percent of people currently have full vaccination protection. However, experts consider a quota of 85 percent for people between twelve and 59 years and 90 percent for older people to be necessary.

Corona incidence has been increasing daily for over a week – significantly more new infections than in the previous week

Original report from July 14, 2021: Berlin – The number of seven-day incidence has been increasing every day for more than a week. According to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) * from Wednesday morning (July 14), it is now 7.1 – the previous day the value was 6.5, and the most recent low on July 6th was 4.9. The health authorities in Germany reported 1,548 new corona infections to the RKI within one day. This is evident from the figures from Wednesday morning, which reflect the status of the RKI dashboard at 4:50 a.m. For comparison: a week ago the value was 985 infections.

On the other hand, the number of corona-related deaths in Germany has fallen within 24 hours. 28 deaths were recorded, a week ago there were 48 deaths.

According to RKI data from Tuesday, the reproductive number, which is decisive for the speed of spread of the coronavirus, was 1.11 and has thus been above the value of 1 for more than a week. The number means that 100 infected people infect 111 more people.

Coronavirus: Lauterbach believes we will “get through well” in the pandemic summer – without a lockdown

At least SPD health politician Karl Lauterbach is currently not assuming that we are on the way to a new lockdown due to the numbers increasing again. “The number of cases is rising again, but that was to be expected with the easing that has just been decided. You will also go further up. But if we don’t open up drastically now and adhere to the most important rule in the pandemic summer, namely a lot goes outside, you have to stay careful inside, then we can get through well, “he told the Passauer Neue Presse on Wednesday. The road in England, where the end of all corona measures was announced for July 19, meanwhile “only creates a wave of chronically ill long-covid patients.”

Coronavirus: Politicians speak out in favor of a more visible vaccination campaign

Meanwhile, more and more politicians and associations are in favor of a more offensive and visible advertising campaign for corona vaccinations in order to quickly convince those who are undecided. “The vaccination campaign should also be advertised with TV spots, among other things,” said the head of the left-wing parliamentary group in the Bundestag, Dietmar Bartsch, of the Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung (July 14). The SPD member of the Bundestag, Bärbel Bas, criticized the fact that the Federal Center for Health Education was “barely visible” so far.

“The existing offers are apparently not sufficient to reach enough people willing to vaccinate,” said the vice-leader of the Social Democrats to the editorial network Germany . “This is where the Federal Minister of Health (Jens Spahn, CDU) is in demand.
We need to significantly expand the information campaign. We need more advertising and education, ”demanded the health expert. The President of the German Association of Cities, Burkhard Jung, made a similar statement to the newspapers of the Funke media group: “We must try on all channels to address people who have so far been reluctant to vaccinate.” Vaccinate doctor’s offices. Dehoga managing director Ingrid Hartges added in the Augsburger Allgemeine : “It is important that we accelerate the vaccination campaign, politicians must do more advertising for it.”

On Tuesday, the President of the German Medical Association, Klaus Reinhardt, spoke out in favor of more intensive advertising for corona vaccinations on television. “I miss the TV spot about vaccinations before the news. And then we have to provide information directly on site, precisely where the willingness to vaccinate has so far been low. We have to approach people, ”Reinhardt told the Rheinische Post. On the same day, Chancellor Angela Merkel and Spahn also made an appeal for the possibility of vaccination. “A vaccination not only protects you, but also someone you are close to, who is important to you, who you love,” said Merkel.
