F1 – Hamilton apologizes to Mercedes after mistakes in Singapore

The British driver could only manage a ninth place at the 2022 Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix, despite the fact that at one point it seemed that it could be a great weekend for the seven-time world champion.

“I apologize to the team, I’ll bounce back,” Lewis Hamilton told Sky Sports after a disappointing race compared to what it could have been.

Hamilton battled for pole on Saturday in qualifying and, in fact, fell less than a tenth off the fastest time, the work of Charles Leclerc. The Mercedes driver started from third position, but at the start he lost a position to Carlos Sainz and from there everything went downhill.

The Briton also made several mistakes unbecoming of a seven-time world champion driver, actions that we are not used to and that ended up costing him dearly. Finally, Hamilton crossed the checkered flag in the ninth position, far from what was expected.

As soon as he got out of his Mercedes W13, the Brackley team driver spoke about his race and analyzed what happened: “I think we started off with a pretty decent weekend. In the race, obviously I was trying, but it was difficult to overtake and then I had That lockup at Turn 7, things happen. It’s a bit sad, but you have to get up and try again.”

Although he still had a chance of salvaging the result after that mistake, Hamilton said he thought it would have been difficult to overtake Sainz at Marina Bay even without making the mistake.

“I would have been able to switch to dry tires earlier. It was what I wanted (to beat Sainz), but it all became a long shot when I made that block.”

“It was an unfortunate race finish to the weekend we were doing, but we can look forward to next weekend at Suzuka and try to see something positive, with Mercedes continuing their recovery. It will be a phenomenal race for sure.” concluded.

The weekend for the star team was to forget, since beyond Hamilton’s ninth place, his teammate, George Russell, finished last with two laps less than the leader after a race that was complicated even before starting the session.
