Singapore GP F1 Race Results and Summary

Sergio Pérez overtook Charles Leclerc, the pole position driver, at the first corner and dominated the race even after switching from intermediate to dry tyres.

Perez had some engine trouble, which helped Leclerc close in the closing laps, but a Ferrari error left him more than 2sec behind after his power unit mishaps were fixed.

However, Pérez faces an investigation from the stewards after the race for an infringement under the Safety Car period. Max Verstappen, his Red Bull teammate, had a bad start, and that forced him to come back until he committed a mistake while trying to pass Lando Norris’s McLaren, and fell to last place, but recovered to be seventh.

F1 Singapore GP 2022 Race Summary

After a delayed start due to torrential rain, all the drivers started on the intermediate tyres. Pérez made a strong start and passed poleman Charles Leclerc before Turn 1, while Carlos Sainz snatched third from Lewis Hamilton and his Mercedes, despite touching slightly before the apex of Turn 2. Fernando Alonso’s Alpine, in his 350th race, was sixth, behind Lando Norris.

Even further back was Max Verstappen, who made a lousy start and had to miss the first corner, dropping him to 12th on the first lap from eighth on the grid, but quickly worked his way into the top 10

Nicholas Latifi in his Williams hit Guanyu Zhou’s Alfa Romeo at Turn 5 on Lap 7, prompting the first safety car of the day to go out. Zhou’s team-mate Valtteri Bottas was also involved in an incident when he collided with the Mercedes of George Russell, who left the pitlane after changing the engine.

Pérez maintained his lead at the restart of the race on lap 11, while Verstappen passed Sebastian Vettel’s Aston Martin and Pierre Gasly’s AlphaTauri to take seventh. The Dutchman was then stuck behind Alonso, until his Renault engine failed on lap 21, triggering a Virtual Safety Car for a couple of laps to retire the Alpine.

Russell went for the medium dry tyres, but he was very slow as he struggled to keep up with them. The return of Alex Albon, who spun his Williams at the start, ran into the wall at Turn 8 on lap 26, and lost his front wing, causing yet another virtual safety car to be deployed. A third Virtual Safety Car appeared when the other Alpine, Esteban Ocon’s, was stopped on lap 28 due to power unit problems.

Verstappen nearly hit Norris at Turn 7 before the restart, then attacked hard to move up to fifth. Hamilton went into the Turn 7 barrier on lap 33, getting back between Norris and Verstappen, but suffered front wing damage.

Leclerc pitted to put the medium tires on the 35 at the same time Russell set the fastest lap, as did Hamilton, who had his front wing repaired but dropped to ninth. Pérez responded in the same way a lap later, as did Sainz and Verstappen.

Yuki Tsunoda collided his AlphaTauri on slick tires at Turn 10, causing the second safety car, and Norris took the opportunity to make his stop and ride dry.

The race resumed with 35 minutes to go in what was now a regulation timed race, with Pérez ahead of Leclerc, Sainz, Norris and Verstappen. Daniel Ricciardo had moved up to sixth in his McLaren but opted for the soft tyres.

Verstappen attacked Norris at Turn 7 but blocked and went straight, rejoining ahead of Hamilton in eighth, but with huge flats, forcing him to pit on the softs. He came back in last place but gained a place when Russell hit Mick Schumacher’s Haas and suffered a puncture.

On dry tyres, Leclerc was much faster than before, just as Pérez reported engine problems on the radio. The DRS kicked in and helped Leclerc push for the lead in the closing laps.

When he seemed about to pass Checo, Leclerc made a mistake and left the DRS zone, while Pérez fixed his power unit and walked away. But the Red Bull driver faced an investigation by the stewards for an infringement under the safety car period, and he did his best until the end to ensure his margin was greater than 5 seconds .

Sainz finished third, ahead of Norris and Ricciardo. Lance Stroll’s Aston Martin was next, while Hamilton gifted Verstappen a position when he ran over at Turn 8 trying to overtake Vettel. Verstappen passed Vettel on the last lap to take seventh place.
