The number of corona cases has also been increasing in the USA for weeks – and yet the New Yorkers should take a breather on Saturday. Tens of thousands want to celebrate their city in Central Park.
New York – Despite the recent rise in the number of cases, tens of thousands of New Yorkers want to celebrate their city’s fight against the corona pandemic at a large open-air concert in Central Park on Saturday.
Bruce Springsteen, the Killers and Andrea Bocelli will perform under the title “We Love New York: The Homecoming Concert”. Together with around 20 other acts, they want to celebrate the end of many restrictions during the corona pandemic.
Around 80 percent of the tickets for the concert broadcast worldwide on CNN were free, but visitors must at least prove their first vaccination. Paul Simon, Jennifer Hudson and Patti Smith and Wyclef Jean are also among the acts announced for the five-hour event starting at 5 p.m. (local time). On Thursday, Carlos Santana, who also appeared, said on CBS that the pandemic brought out the best in many people. “That’s what we want to celebrate: light, spirit and soul.”
“This homecoming concert will be the sign of our rebirth,” Mayor Bill de Blasio announced at the end of July when the program was presented. “New York City is back, you can see it, you can feel it, and it’s time to celebrate this on the Great Lawn, where so many other great things have happened,” said de Blasio.
In New York, most of the restrictions due to the pandemic have been lifted, but since the beginning of the week a vaccination certificate has been mandatory for most interiors of restaurants, bars, theaters, cinemas and other leisure facilities. The east coast metropolis of New York was the epicenter of the corona pandemic in the USA last spring. The infection process has now been under control for months. dpa
