Gabby Petito case: friend's objects discovered

Gabby Petito’s boyfriend has been missing for weeks. Now a trail leads to a nature reserve in Florida.

North Port – In the Gabby Petito case, investigators found “items of interest” in a nature reserve while searching for the missing friend. These were discovered on Wednesday morning in the Carlton reservation, said the FBI in Tampa, Florida.

TV images showed how sniffer dogs and police combed the grounds of Myakkahatchee Creek Environmental Park, which is part of the Carlton Reservation. Previously, the young man’s parents are said to have met investigators in the park, as US media reported, citing the lawyer for the 23-year-old’s family. Accordingly, the find should concern the friend’s personal belongings.

The 22-year-old Gabby Petito had not returned from a trip through the United States with her boyfriend in the summer. The case is attracting attention both in the US and internationally – not least because the Florida couple shared numerous pictures and videos from their trip on social networks.

After an intensive search, Petito’s body was finally found in September in the state of Wyoming. According to the coroner, the young woman was strangled.

Petito’s friend had returned from traveling with Petito in September alone. Shortly afterwards he also disappeared without a trace. The police have been looking for the 23-year-old for weeks – especially in the nature reserve in which the objects have now been discovered. Why the journey of the couple, who looked happy in pictures, came to a fatal end is open. dpa
