Jerez could not have MotoGP in 2024 for the first time in 37 years

The rotation policy in the four Spanish circuits that the MotoGP promoter wanted to introduce in 2022 will be postponed for another year after the provisional calendar for next season is known, which includes the current four traditional appointments.

This Tuesday, Carmelo Ezpeleta , CEO of Dorna Sports, was in Seville with Juan Marín , Vice President of the Board and Minister of Tourism, Regeneration, Justice and Local Administration, to sign the contract to celebrate the Grand Prix on May 1, 2022 of Spain next season, reaching an agreement so that Jerez will also host the 2023 race. However, Marín himself was in charge of warning that the 2024 race is not guaranteed.

“I only have words of thanks to Dorna for betting on us, there is enormous competition from other circuits, it is true that we have had to adapt to this circumstance and we have guaranteed the 2022 and 2023 tests, and if there was the possibility also the 2024 And, if that were not the case, it would skip to 2025”, said Marín in statements collected by Diario de Jerez .

With these statements, the Andalusian politician makes it clear that the rotation policy of the Spanish circuits announced by Dorna and postponed due to the pandemic, could come into operation as of 2023.

Ezpeleta , for his part, added that “there are good prospects, there is a huge demand for grand prizes in other countries, but for now the expectations that we set with the Junta (of Andalusia) to move forward have come out.”

The Jerez Circuit has hosted the Grand Prix of the Motorcycle World Championship since 1987, always under the name of the Spanish Grand Prix , except in 1988 when it hosted the Portuguese Grand Prix. Jerez was also the venue for two races in the year of the pandemic, 2020, with the Andalusian GP being held. In 2023 it will be 37 uninterrupted years of racing on the Andalusian track.

The circuits of Valencia, Aragón and Catalunya will have to face the same risk of entering the rotation of the Spanish tracks when they negotiate the next renewals with Dorna.
