The Berlinale no longer honors the acting performance separately according to gender. In the future, the German Acting Prize will no longer be about gender.

Berlin – In the future, the German Acting Award will no longer decide between men and women.

“Actors are diverse, live from diversity and should not be excluded from the possibility of being nominated because of their gender,” said the Bundesverband Schauspiel as organizer. Nevertheless, neither gender will have to fear having fewer chances of being nominated. The circle of nominees and award winners will be expanded. The association takes account of the needs of its members.

A similar change had previously taken place at the Berlinale. As one of the first major film festivals, it no longer honors acting performance separately by gender.

The “Duo” category is new

Another new feature of the German Acting Award is the “Duo” category: this award aims to emphasize the importance of playing together. Some divisions are renamed. “We don’t want to celebrate the best, we want to celebrate the most inspiring colleagues,” said Hans-Werner Meyer, board member of the federal association, about the reorganization.

The association, which was founded in 2006, claims to have 3,800 members from the film, television and theater sectors. The presentation of the German Acting Prize has been held annually in Berlin since 2012, this year it is planned for September 9th. dpa
