German Unity Day (Tag der Deutschen Einheit)

0

Much is made of the division of Germany and the wall that once divided the country. But Wiedervereinigung (reunification) is just as important and on October 3 the country remembers getting back together.

Tag der Deutschen Einheit , or German Unity Day, commemorates the day in 1990 when a unification treaty was signed between the former German Democratic Republic ( Deutsche Demokratische Republik ) and officially joined the Federal Republic of Germany. Willy Brandt’s words, Jetzt wächst zusammen, was zusammengehört (“Now what belongs grows”), are echoed in the celebrations. On a public holiday, this is an opportunity for Germans to recognize the importance of being a united nation.

German Unity Day celebrations in Germany

Most cities celebrate citizens’ festivals ( Bürgerfest ) on October 3, but the main celebration takes place in the state capital of the German state that presides over the Bundesrat that year. That means that the events of 2015, the 25th anniversary of the fall of the wall, will focus on Frankfurt.

These celebrations are usually big and generic, which doesn’t mean they can’t be fun. Enjoy the festivities, but also know how to expect large crowds at parks, recreational sites, or any other event. Also note that shops, supermarkets, banks, and government offices will be closed (but public transportation will be in operation).

In an act of unity among all the citizens of Germany, this is also the Open Mosque Day.

Berlin German Unity Day Celebration

An open-air festival takes place in the German capital every year. Music, food, drinks and the ever-present Riesenrad will mark the weekend’s celebration around the highly symbolic Brandenburg Gate on Straße des 17. Juni . Berlin is also one of the best cities to tour the many open mosques.

Oktoberfest overlaps with Tag der Deutschen Einheit, as the beer festival is traditionally held until the first Sunday in October. Around 400,000 people gather in the city center for music, food, beer (of course) and a celebration centered on Germany. Also expect the tents to fill up quickly for the holidays, so show up early to get a seat (but not too early).
