The number of victims after the devastating earthquake in Haiti continues to rise. Although more and more aid deliveries are arriving in the country, they often do not reach those in need.

Port-au-Prince – The death toll rose to 2207 after the severe earthquake in Haiti. 344 other people are still missing, as the civil defense of the Caribbean state announced on Sunday.

Over 12,000 people were injured in the 7.2 quake in the southwest of the country a week ago and more than 52,000 houses were destroyed.

Meanwhile, more and more aid supplies and emergency services were arriving in Haiti. At the weekend, the US Navy’s “USS Arlington” reached the Haitian coast and brought doctors, nurses and medical equipment, two helicopters and 200 marines ashore.

The US aid organization Samaritan’s Purse opened a field hospital in Les Cayes and treated its first patients. A team from the German aid organization ISAR Germany with 33 doctors, nurses and paramedics as well as eleven tons of material has meanwhile arrived in Haiti.

However, aid has still not reached many people. The roads and bridges to the disaster area have been partially destroyed, and criminal gangs control the outskirts of the capital Port-au-Prince. dpa
