Read more about Paris and Toulon.

Toulon is one of the most important naval bases in France and the main naval port in the Mediterranean. Located on the French Riviera between Marseille and Hyères, it was here that the entire French fleet sank in 1942 to escape German forces. It is a major transport hub for the south of France, with good train connections from the north to the south of France, ferries to Corsica, and a sprawling international airport. There is a good photo museum and a great weekend market. Shop there, then have a drink or light lunch at the port.
