Microsoft announces the end of Internet Explorer (forever)

0

Internet Explorer, Microsoft’s popular browser developed for its Windows operating system, first appeared in 1995, just a month after the release of Windows 95.

At that time, the browser was included in the “Internet Jumpstart Kit”, which was part of “Microsoft Plus”, an upgrade package for Windows.

However, we can find a more exact origin of the browser during Internet Strategy Day, during which the company announced that it was considering the Internet, and that it wanted to add different connected functions to its products.

Thus, for the development of the browser, the company relied heavily on the code of a browser called Mosaic, created by Spyglass. But there was already some competition in the sector. In fact, Internet Explorer did not immediately rule out Netscape, since the latter managed to retain half of its market share until the arrival of version 3 of the browser, when it brought with it an essential change: Microsoft decided to integrate it directly into its operating system.

After many versions, and millions of users, Microsoft has confirmed that it is finally retiring Internet Explorer , the browser it created 26 years ago. Although it is still used by many users, most use competing browsers such as Google’s Chrome, Mozilla Firefox or Apple’s Safari.

And, as the company has indicated in a blog post a few days ago, it seems that the future of Internet Explorer in Windows 10 is in Microsoft Edge , its other web browser.

According to Microsoft, “Microsoft Edge is not only a faster, more modern and more secure browsing experience than Internet Explorer, but it can also address a key concern: compatibility with older and legacy websites and applications.”

As of June 2022 it will no longer be available

According to the calendar proposed by the company, Internet Explorer 11 for desktop will officially cease to be supported on June 15, 2022 , at which point the company will finally withdraw it for most consumer users, although it will remain for some consumers. since it will keep the browser available in the Windows 10 Long Term Servicing Channel (LTSC) , in order to continue offering support to companies that depend directly on this application to carry out their operations.

Additionally, Internet Explorer-based websites and applications will continue to work with Edge until at least 2029, largely due to the fact that many organizations have browser-based websites.

In fact, for some time Microsoft Edge includes an option that allows you to use some typical Internet Explorer functions, such as compatibility with web pages that are still based on the standards of the original browser, as well as ActiveX controls.

Since the official arrival of Microsoft Edge in 2015 it was evident that the end of Internet Explorer was getting closer and closer, which is why the company has announced on many occasions the end of its browser support gradually.

Chrome, Google’s browser, controls about 65 percent of the market, while Safari, the popular browser created by Apple (and available on its computers and devices), occupies the second position with a market share of about 19 percent. hundred. In third and fourth place are Firefox and Microsoft Edge itself, with a share of 3.59 percent and 3.39 percent, respectively.
