US President Joe Biden and his wife Jill Biden mourn their dog, Champ. After 13 years at the side of the Bidens, he has now died peacefully.

Washington – US President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden mourn the loss of their German Shepherd, Champ. The White House announced that he died peacefully on Saturday (June 19, 2021) at the age of 13. “He has been our constant valued companion for the past 13 years and was adored by the entire Biden family,” it translates into a statement that was shared by the US President’s Twitter account. “In our happiest moments and on our most sorrowful days, he was with us.”

At Joe Biden’s side, the dog moved into the White House together with the German Shepherd Major to change office in January 2021. In doing so, he continued a more than a century-old tradition that was only interrupted during Donald Trump’s tenure. According to the Spiegel, he once asked what he would look like if he were to walk a dog on the White House lawn.

Trump had spared the residence staff the risk of coming into close contact with the dentition of a “presidential dog”. Major bit a member of Biden’s security team in March 2021, according to a report from CNN. He and the late champ were then “house arrested” for a few days in the US state of Delaware, and Major also took part in “additional training”, as Jill Biden let know.

“Wherever we were, he wanted to be, and everything was immediately better when he was with us,” said the Bidens after the death of Champs. Joe Biden also linked him with the election victory at Barack Obama’s side in the 2008 presidential election. A US news portal reported in August 2020 that Biden had promised his wife Jill Biden to buy a dog if he should move into the White House as Vice President. (mp / dpa)
