The Joint Monitoring Commission for the Comprehensive Plan of Joint Action (PIAC), the nuclear agreement signed between Iran and the main world powers, will meet this Sunday in Vienna. The announcement follows the election of Ebrahim Raisi as Iran’s president in this Friday’s election.
“The Joint Commission will resume on Sunday June 20 in Vienna,” the European Commission reported in an official statement.
The Joint Commission will meet under the presidency of the High Representative for EU Foreign Policy, Josep Borrell, and the Deputy Secretary General of the European External Action Service, Enrique Mora.
“ There will be representatives from China, France, Germany, Russia, the United Kingdom and Iran. The participants will continue with the contacts on a possible reincorporation of the United States to the PIAC and on how to guarantee the full and effective application of the PIAC ”, explained Brussels.
Iran has already produced more than 2.4 kilograms highly enriched , specifically to almost 60 percent, according to an IAEA report. This purity is well above the 4 percent maximum set in the 2015 nuclear agreement whose reactivation Tehran negotiates with the United States, although it still remains for the 90 percent necessary for the manufacture of an atomic bomb.
The country has announced to date the withdrawal of its commitments on several of the points of the agreement, which has caused fear in the rest of the signatories of a possible collapse of the pact. However, Iranian authorities have consistently argued that these steps can be reversed if the United States withdraws sanctions and returns to the 2015 nuclear deal, which it unilaterally abandoned in 2018.
