The Bank of Mexico (Banxico) reported that bills that have been scratched do lose their value, contrary to what was thought that this was not the case, so it is important that you take into account in which cases they do accept it in the various transactions you make in your daily life.

According to the autonomous body, there are three types of legends that make the ticket lose its value in the market.

“Bills with stamps or scratches lose their value when they contain words, phrases or drawings that are intended to disseminate messages aimed at the public, of a political, religious or commercial nature,” Banxico detailed on social networks.

The institution gives as an example two of this type of messages that would render the bills worthless:

  • “Cancel your vote” (political message)
  • “Buy in Wama stores” (commercial message addressed to the public).
  • “Hail Saint Patrick, whoever has this ticket will have a lot of money, write 10 tickets” (religious message addressed to the public).

Do damaged banknotes lose value?

According to the Condusef, a ticket that is dirty, worn, discolored, with signs of abuse, does not detract from the value of the ticket in any case, it retains its value after evaluation.

In the event that the coins or bills are not accepted in a commercial establishment, a complaint can be filed with the Federal Consumer Protection Agency (Profeco) since in accordance with article 58 of the Federal Consumer Protection Law.

“The supplier of goods, products or services may not deny or condition them to the consumer for reasons of gender, nationality, ethnicity, sexual preference, religion or any other particularity, the case at hand falling into the latter category, where a merchant refuses to grant a merchandise for payment in a currency of a certain denomination”, details the text.
