RKI: Incidence at its lowest level since October

The numbers continue to look very good. The corona situation in Germany is becoming more and more relaxed – also in the intensive care units.

Berlin (dpa) – In Germany, the number of reported infections with the corona virus continues to decline significantly. The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) reported a 7-day incidence of 20.8 on Wednesday (previous day: 22.9; previous week: 36.8), the lowest value in eight months.

The good development could be due to the warmer temperatures, the growing immune protection in the population, especially through vaccinations, as well as rapid tests at school, work and leisure. Virus mutants such as the Delta variant that first appeared in India remain a risk factor. So far, however, there has been no significant increase in this country.

With a few exceptions, the incidence in all rural districts and urban districts was below the striking threshold of 50 – only a little more than 10 were above. The city district of Zweibrücken comes in last with 79 infections per 100,000 inhabitants per week.

At the state level, all states have an incidence of less than 25 – with the exception of Baden-Württemberg. For the southwest, the RKI gave the value as 26.9. The number of people in intensive care units continues to decline. Most recently, the German Interdisciplinary Association for Intensive and Emergency Medicine gave it well below 2000. At the end of April there were still more than 5000.

In the meantime, more than 45 percent of people in Germany have received at least one vaccine dose. One must now be careful that people do not become careless in the future and, for example, no longer pick up the second vaccination because they no longer feel like it or it is too complicated, said the head of virology at the Berlin Charité, Christian Drosten, in the podcast on Tuesday “Coronavirus-Update” (NDR-Info). “Things like that just can’t happen. I think that will be the next big task. “

Drosten therefore expects a discussion on promoting vaccination readiness in a few weeks. The goal is at least 80 percent double vaccinations, at least in the “adult population capable of vaccination”. Hopefully this will be achieved by the end of August, mid-September. Even after the set order has been canceled since Monday, it is initially important to vaccinate the groups in which this is urgent due to the increased Covid 19 risk. At the moment, the focus must still be on caring for people in their mid-40s, said Drosten.

The health authorities reported 3,254 cases to the RKI for new infections per day. A week ago the value was 4917 infections. According to the information, 107 new deaths were recorded across Germany within 24 hours. A week ago there were 179 dead.

The nationwide seven-day R-value was 0.74 according to the RKI situation report from Wednesday evening (previous day: 0.71). This means that 100 infected people infect 0.74 more people. The R-value represents the occurrence of the infection 8 to 16 days ago. If it is below 1 for a longer period of time, the infection process subsides; if it is consistently higher, the number of cases increases.
