United States files second labor complaint against factory in Mexico

The United States asked Mexico to review whether workers at an auto parts factory were denied labor rights.

The second complaint from the United States comes in less than a month, the first one filed, the same in labor matters and under the new conditions stipulated in the new Treaty between Mexico, the United States and Canada (T-MEC).

The United States Trade Representative’s office made the request involving the Tridonex auto parts factory in the northern border city of Matamoros, after the AFL-CIO union federation asked the agency to review the case over allegations that the The factory denied workers the rights of collective bargaining and free association.

This Tuesday, Kamala Harris, vice president of the United States, in her visit to Mexico announced a package of 130 million dollars (million dollars) in support of Washington to defend labor rights.

The goal is for Mexico to implement the labor reform over the next four years, which guarantees labor justice and freedom of association.

Mexico’s labor reform is an essential part of the new Treaty between Mexico, the United States and Canada (T-MEC), which has already registered its first labor complaints at General Motors plants in Silao, Guanajuato.

Since NAFTA came into force in 1994, which had few tools to enforce labor standards, wages in Mexico have stagnated and now rank as the lowest among the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development countries ( OECD).

The TMEC was designed to change that by empowering workers to demand better wages, which is also meant to prevent low labor costs from cutting more jobs in the United States.
