The port terminal operator SSA México will invest 30 million dollars in new equipment in the country’s largest port in Manzanillo, Colima, which despite persistent saturation – which even precedes the pandemic – continues to grow in terms of container movement.

In a statement, the company – a subsidiary of Grupo Carrix – estimated that the dynamism will continue throughout the year, for which the projected investments are destined to reinforce the infrastructure, “while increasing efficiency and high productivity in response to the needs business partners”.

“The Specialized Container Terminal (TEC-1), operated by SSA Mexico in the port of Manzanillo, maintained a sustained annual growth of 5% in the movement of TEUs (20-foot containers), during the first quarter of 2022”, the company said in a statement.

Of the total container movement of the Port of Manzanillo in 2021, SSA Mexico operated 48%, while at the national level it handled 21%, according to company data.

The investment of 30 million dollars will go to the purchase of two new Super Post Panamax cranes for operation in docks and six RTG type yard cranes, which will arrive and be installed in the second half of 2022.

Currently, the strategic bonded warehouse works with four RTG cranes, while increasing the handling of exports, thanks to the fact that the cargo enters the port area already released to be loaded onto the ship, says the company.

In addition to Manzanillo, the company has seen growth in other venues such as Lázaro Cárdenas, where it registered record figures in the Specialized Car Terminal in the first quarter of the year, with a movement of 134,650 cars, 32% more than in the same period of 2021 .

“The number of automotive brands also reported an increase of 16% from January to March. This terminal serves (…) 96% of the volume of cars that the port of Lázaro Cárdenas receives,” the company reported.

Meanwhile, in the port of Veracruz, the port operator moved 48% of the total volume of automotive units, while for 2022 it calculates a volume of 400 thousand cars, of which 74% would be for export, while those for imports will increase by 17% compared to the previous year.
