In Denmark, researchers are making a surprising discovery: dozens of people are infected twice with the corona variant Omikron within a very short time.
Copenhagen – According to current knowledge from Denmark, it is possible to become infected twice in quick succession with corona subvariants* of Omikron*. As the SSI Health Institute published in a study on Tuesday (February 22, 2022), an infection with the corona subtype BA.2* can occur directly after an initial infection with BA.1.
As the SSI writes on its official website, this seems to happen only rarely and mainly affects younger, unvaccinated people.
Omicron subvariants: Study from Denmark informs about double infections
According to the SSI, the scientists examined 47 cases in which one and the same person became infected first with subvariant BA.1 and then with BA.2 within 20 to 60 days. According to the institute, the majority of those who were infected twice were young and unvaccinated and only had mild symptoms during their infection. But such a double infection is rather harmless: nobody had become seriously ill or had to be treated in clinics.
In Denmark, the omicron subtype BA.2 has dominated since the beginning of the year. Previously, since the end of November 2021, BA.1 accounted for the majority of all new infections. According to Chancellor Olaf Scholz* (SPD*) and Federal Minister of Health Karl Lauterbach*, the omicron wave in Germany has already peaked – the number of new infections is falling nationwide.
Although the BA.1 sub-variant dominates in Germany with over 80 percent, BA.2 also increased noticeably from January and now accounts for around 15 percent of new infections.
