The world is preparing for an extreme warming of 2.4 ° C

The Glasgow Climate Summit (COP26), with the aim of tackling the global climate crisis, is not on the right track. Climate Action Tracker (CAT) has published an analysis of the national pledges made at COP26 so far and compared them to those presented last year. Their calculations suggest that the pledges and announcements promised so far don't go far enough and will put the planet on a 2.4 ° C path, above pre-industrial levels by the end of the century.

A huge gap in credibility, action and commitment

Some 140 countries covering 90% of global emissions have announced long-term targets to reach net zero, but CAT has stated that only a few have plans to seriously hit the target.

To meet the 1.5 ° C target, the United Nations wants to achieve "net zero", where no more greenhouse gases are emitted than can be simultaneously absorbed, by 2050. But this will be impossible unless Emissions, mostly carbon dioxide from burning coal, oil and gas, are reduced by 45% from 2010 levels by 2030.

"Today's leaders must be held accountable for this huge 2030 gap. If we wait another five years and only discuss the 2035 commitments, the 1.5 ° C limit may be missed," adds Niklas Höhne of the NewClimate Institute , another CAT partner organization.
