How far does Putin go? Many people around the world and in Germany are currently asking this question. According to a survey, far more than half of the people in this country are even afraid of a Third World War.

Cologne/Berlin – Russia’s war of aggression in the Ukraine scares many millions of people in Germany of a Third World War.

According to a Forsa survey commissioned by RTL and ntv, 69 percent even fear that NATO will be drawn into the conflict because Russian President Vladimir Putin could attack a member of the western defense alliance – for example one of the Baltic states of Estonia and Latvia , Lithuania. And that this could also affect Germany directly.

25 percent of respondents do not share this concern. Above all, supporters of the AfD are therefore above average with 48 percent convinced that there will be no world war.

Montgomery: Take the Germans’ fear of war seriously

The chairman of the World Medical Association, Frank Ulrich Montgomery, advises taking care of this fear of war in the German population. “It is important that people who are afraid of war are taken seriously and that their feelings are not downplayed,” Montgomery told the newspapers of the Funke media group.

“Fear of nuclear war is not a totally unreal fear. That’s why it’s no use just coming up with rational counterarguments.” You have to talk about the acute fears.

“Especially in the older generation, it can now happen that people react traumatically to the war news, that they experience increased fears, withdraw and, for example, start stashing food,” explained Montgomery (69).

threat of nuclear weapons

Montgomery advised that people now suffering from fear of war should seek talks with friends and family. In the case of strong fears, however, it can also be helpful to speak to your family doctor or to contact an anxiety outpatient clinic.

After the invasion of Ukraine and the numerous reactions from the West, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered on Sunday that the deterrent weapons of the nuclear power Russia be put on special alert. The announcement was taken as a threat to NATO with the country’s nuclear arsenal.

78 percent for arms supplies in Ukraine

Meanwhile, three out of four people in Germany – 78 percent each – support German arms deliveries to Ukraine and also the rearmament of the Bundeswehr. Only a few (16 percent) think both are wrong.

Half of Germans would welcome Ukraine’s admission to the European Union (EU). Only a minority (45 percent) would like Ukraine to join NATO. The skepticism is particularly great in the eastern German federal states (55 percent against).

A world war is a war that extends geographically across several countries and continents and entails a complete reorganization of international relations. By name, there is the First World War (1914 to 1918) and the Second World War (1939 to 1945) triggered by Germany.

The term “World War III” has been a horror scenario for decades, as it would probably take place as a nuclear war and a large part of humanity would die in a relatively short time. dpa
