What is and how does the ISA System work, which will be mandatory in 2022

The European Commission proposed a series of safety regulations for all vehicles sold in member countries of the European Union. One of the most important is the entry into force in May 2022 of the ISA System (Intelligent Speed Assistance) . From this date all new vehicles homologated in the EU will have to have it compulsorily, and it is estimated that it will reduce traffic collisions by 30%.

ISA system: what is it and what advantages does it bring

But what exactly is the ISA System? It is a vehicle safety technology based on the use of a signal recognition video camera and a database that stores all speed limits on the roads. Both elements are linked to the GPS, and what they do is help the driver not to exceed the maximum speed allowed on the road .

Simply put, what the ISA System does is read the signs on the road and, together with the database, warns the driver through GPS of the speed limit of the road .

Taking into account that currently speeding is the main cause of traffic accidents , especially on secondary roads, the massive use of this technology will help to significantly reduce collisions.

How does it work?

It is important to understand in detail how it works. First of all, the vehicle receives information on where it is thanks to the GPS . In addition, a digital map indicates what is the maximum speed allowed. This is combined with a video camera that recognizes the signals.

The speed limit on the road appears at all times on the dashboard of the vehicle in question, which is updated at all times. Once the vehicle reaches this limit, it automatically limits the power so that it is not exceeded.

Now the driver can ignore the recommendation. To do this, you will simply have to speed up more so that the ISA System is disabled . Thus, if, for example, you are passing a truck on a highway just as it enters a section where the maximum allowed speed is lower, you can temporarily override the Intelligent Speed Assistant.

However, if the driver continues to drive over the speed limit for several seconds, the system will display both a visual and aural warning .
