Nielsen is one of the most famous market analysis companies in the world. They are not a company of visionary analysts, like Michael Patcher and his premonitions, but are often based on rather elaborate market research. And precisely today they have released one of the latest studies carried out and that takes the world of video games as the basis of analysis.

The questionnaire asks several questions and, above all, it extracts a very positive data that we gamers will love. More and more is being played and for example this same June it was 21% higher than last year.

But the study is completed by more data, some of them interesting and involving consoles that many have forgotten today but that for some are still sources of fun. Did you think the GameCube was dead? Well, it turns out that its users use it constantly, much more than those of the Wii, which, according to what is seen in the graphics, rarely remember it.

Like all analysis, it does not have to reflect reality in an exact and certain way that some of you will not agree very much. In any case, let’s review the most interesting points of the analysis that took six months, from January 2009 to June.

The consoles with the most use in minutes during the six months of the analysis were Xbox 360, Wii and PlayStation 2. Yes, you read correctly, the old Sony console continues to break the cord and is in a very good position. It seems that PlayStation 3 users play just a little bit more than those on the original Xbox. In the last place GameCube.

Let’s move on to the percentage of active users during those months. People who play regularly and who have the console among one of their most used assets on a continuous basis. It is curious to see how Xbox 360 users use it in the wild, followed by those of PlayStation 3, Xbox, PS2, GameCube and lastly and at a clear disadvantage, Nintendo Wii.

Third, we come to the war of the sexes. And it is that although many get to the idea of what type of console is the one that their mothers, sisters or girlfriends prefer and which one prefers the heavy friend who loves gore and Sam Raimi, the figures show that in certain cases things are very equalizer.

Xbox 360 is eminently used by men , PlayStation 2 could be considered to be living in a technical draw (there are differences but they are small), like PS3, Xbox and GameCube. On the other hand, Nintendo Wii sees the balance definitively tipped towards female users.

The positive is that according to Nielsen the transition to the new generation of consoles has already been made since between the three they eat more than 50% of the minutes played until June 2009.

Regarding the data of Wii, Xbox 360 and PS3 we could talk a lot but I think the summary is quite clear. Wii is the best-selling console and has a very diverse audience, from inveterate gamers to housewives who play from grapes to pears. Hence its bad data in active users who play regularly and its positive point in minutes played.

PlayStation 3 is still in no man’s land, advancing little by little until it has finished defining its market and its entire potential group of users. Let’s also remember that it was the one that was launched later and at the highest price.

Microsoft’s console, Xbox 360, continues to show its good work in America and although the numbers show that it has an eminently male audience, it can boast that its users play a lot with it.

And now it’s your turn. Do you think the Nielsen data corresponds to reality? I personally find it hard to believe that Nintendo Wii has fewer active users than GameCube when they are also compatible. .. anyway they are just statistics that will change again in a while.

Let’s stay with the positive and that is that there are more and more gamers.
