Will Smith remembers abusive father in Will

It was a difficult time: in his memoir, actor Will Smith writes about the difficult relationship with his dominant father.

Los Angeles – Hollywood star Will Smith (53) said he suffered from his aggressive father as a child.

“My father was violent, but he was also there at every game, every performance and every concert,” writes the actor in his autobiography “Will”, which will be released on November 9th. An excerpt from it was published in advance in the US magazine “People”.

“He was an alcoholic, but he was sober at every premiere of each of my films,” writes Smith. “He listened to every record. He visited every studio. The same intense perfectionism that terrified his family brought food to the table every night of my life. “

In the book excerpt, Smith also describes a particularly formative event from his childhood: When he was nine years old, his father hit his mother in the head so hard that she spat blood. “That moment in this bedroom has probably defined who I am more than any other moment in my life.” His parents separated a few years later and divorced in 2000.

Memories of the incident would have stayed with him years later when he was caring for his father, who was now suffering from cancer. “As a kid, I always told myself that one day I would avenge my mother,” said Smith. Once it occurred to him to push his father’s wheelchair down the stairs. “When the decades of pain, anger and resentment subsided, I shook my head and rolled Daddio into the bathroom.”

Smith claims to have worked on the book for two years. As a co-author, he brought on board Mark Manson, the author of the Lebenshilfe guide “The subtle art of shitting on it”. dpa
