Science fiction introduces us to a universe of elaborate and futuristic worlds that can often seem unrealistic to us. But humanity has made incredible technological advances in recent years, especially in the last century , and many of the ideas predicted in science fiction have ended up becoming reality.
Some predictions, such as autonomous vehicles, are still in the early stages of development and operation, but scientists around the world have achieved many other milestones first described in fiction, such as getting humans to the moon. , described by our dear Jules Verne in “From the Earth to the Moon .” It is curious that in 1865 Verne already described the mission of three Americans launched in a spaceship to land on the moon. Even more astonishing is that parts of the novel were similar to the first real moon landing , which occurred 104 years after Verne wrote his iconic novel.
And it is that science fiction is not alien to the predictions of the future.
As a curiosity, in Arthur C. Clarke’s 1990 novel, “The Specter of the Titanic,” 2012 is the year that the Titanic, the most famous ship in history, would rise from the bottom of the ocean. However, 2012 passed and the remains of the Titanic still lie at 3,800 meters deep in the North Atlantic Ocean.
So while some science fiction predictions have not come true, like this case , if we were to make a calendar of future events based on speculative fiction (taking works from both genres of science fiction and fantasy), it is clear that We would have it a bit complicated , especially since some authors feel a certain natural reluctance when it comes to setting a specific date to what they imagine in their heads. We could cite as an example “Ender’s Game” by Orson Scott Card or “ The Last Man” by Mary Shelley, which tells the story of a futuristic world that has been devastated by a plague; both without a specific date.
It is true that by not specifying a specific year, writers allow their predictions the possibility that, at some point, they may come true.
But today we will focus on those that their authors did formalize a specific year and century. We travel to a distant or near, it depends on the perspective, year 2020.
How did you see literature, cinema and video games this year?
