Scientific Selfies – First Selfie Ever

The technique of self-photography is one of the most common in modern society. This style of immortalizing moments is the most common in social networks, because one thing is certain, and it is that generally, people love to be part of their images. In fact, it seems that photographs without human presence are the ones that are truly surprising due to their popular disuse.

Selfies have spread in an astonishing way and have captivated personalities of all kinds, from the ordinary person to the most prestigious celebrity. Astronauts, actresses, politicians … sooner or later, everyone has taken at least one occasion to take a photo of themselves.

This English term, ‘ selfie’ , was proclaimed in 2013 as word of the year by the publisher Oxford University Press, which publishes the Oxford English Dictionary . However, although the word is new, the concept of self-photography is not, because if we look back, we will see that it is an evolution of the self-portraits of a lifetime.

But what difference really does these selfies make?

In 2005, the first formal foundations of what really defined a selfie and differentiated it from other styles were established. The key component has undoubtedly been (leaving aside the need for the author of the photo to appear) the subsequent publication of the image on social networks . The photographer, Jim Krause , thus established the formal description that is still used today. It is “a photograph that one has taken, usually with a smartphone or a webcam, and is published on the online site of a social network.”

These photos acquired, in the beginning, a purpose of socializing people and little by little that objective has become almost an insatiable need . There are millions of images with these characteristics and it is increasingly difficult to find one that is truly original. However, in the amazing field of science , selfies have not gone unnoticed and therefore we have compiled the most relevant selfies taken to date in this photo gallery.
