An 8.4 earthquake shakes Chile and puts a tsunami on alert

The Earth has trembled again. After the earthquakes in Nepal, Japan and the earthquake that took place in 2010 also on the South American Pacific coast, the plates have moved violently again causing several deaths and thousands of evacuees. " Once again, we have had to face a hard blow from nature, " explained the president of the Republic of Chile, Michelle Bachelet.

According to the National Center of Seismology of Chile, the epicenter took place 42 kilometers west of Canela Baja, exactly at latitude -31.553 and longitude -71.864 and at a depth of 11.1 kilometers . The official power has been 8.4 degrees on the Richter scale.

The danger now is both the probable aftershocks and the risk of suffering tsunamis in various parts of the planet. After the earthquake occurred, the United States Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) issued several warnings for abnormal waves in Chile, Ecuador, Peru and even Hawaii, more than 10,000 kilometers away from the epicenter.

Fortunately, the Andean country, faced with the obvious danger of earthquakes due to its position between tectonic plates, has earthquake-resistant buildings, which minimizes material and personal damage when a natural disaster of this magnitude occurs.

As Michelle Bachelet herself pointed out in the informative press conference, " a Catastrophe Zone will be declared in all those affected areas ."
