Among the many consequences that global warming can bring, there is one that has so far gone unnoticed . Because, according to a study published in the journal Weather, Climate and Society , rising temperatures could even make it difficult for planes to take off.
The problem would be due to the decrease in density in the air, which would reduce the ability of the wings to rise . Therefore, larger aircraft would need even more runway run or, if this is not possible, reduce the weight on board.
Researchers have taken into account the worst-case scenario of summer temperatures and have calculated that cargo and passenger restrictions for a Boeing 737-800 would increase from 50% to 200% at four airports in the United States between the 2050s and 2070s. The alternative to these measures would be to build longer runways or more aerodynamic airplanes.
