A team of researchers from the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University (Germany) has concluded that electrical stimulation can help us control dreams , which is known as lucid dreaming, which are only those dreams in which, in addition to having full consciousness, also can control and direct the plot of the dream.
The experts carried out an experiment with 27 volunteers that aimed to find out whether, by stimulating the brain with small, harmless gamma-type electrical currents, lucid dreams could be induced. Thus, they evaluated the neural activity and general experience of all the participants while they slept.
After reaching three minutes of REM (Rapid Eye Movement) phase in a row, the researchers induced gamma wave electrical stimulations at different frequencies in the frontal and temporal regions of the brain. Right after these, they woke up the volunteers and subjected them to the analysis of the LuCiD system , a method devised to rate dreams based on a number of factors.
The results of the study, published in the journal Nature Neuroscience , explain that the gamma frequencies of 40 Hz and, with less effect, those of 25 Hz, enhanced the appearance of lucid dreams .
“The 40 Hz reflected stronger results regarding lucid vision and dissociation. On the other hand, at 25 Hz the volunteers apparently controlled the plot of the dream, ”says Ursula Voss, co-author of the work.
