The most absurd investigations of the year

ig-2011MagazineAnnals of Improbable Research has already released which are, in his opinion, the most absurd investigations of the year, whose authors have received the awards during theceremony of the 21st edition of the Ig Nobel Prizes. According to the organizers, “it is aboutawards for jobs that make you laugh first and then think“.

The Medicine Prize went to a team of scientists from the Netherlands, Belgium, the United States and Australia for a study on how decision-making improves with a full bladder. He also received a John Perry Award from Stanford University for hisStructured Procrastination Theory, which argues that those who put things off for later can be motivated to do something important as long as they do it as a way to avoid doing something of greater relevance. Karl Halvor Teigen, from the University of Oslo, Norway, earned an IgNobel for trying to understandwhy, in their daily lives, people sigh. Researchers Anna Wilkinson and Natalie Sebanz went home with another award for a study that found no evidence that yawning is contagious among red-footed tortoises.

The one in Mathematics fell on a largegroup of seers whose predictions about the end of the world have not come true. Daryll Gwynne and David Rentz received the Ig Nobel in Biology for discovering that certain types of beetles try to mate with certain types of Australian beer bottles. And the Physics study was taken by a study by French and Dutch scientists to try to determinewhy discus throwers get dizzy and hammer throwers don’t.

Another of the fun accolades went to Makoto Imai, Naoki Urushihata, Hideki Tanemura, Yukinobu Tajima, Hideaki Goto, Koichiro Mizoguchi and Junichi Murakami of Japan for determining the ideal density of a horseradish, wasabi, carried through the air to wake up people who are sleeping and by applying this knowledge to iInvent a fire alarm with wasabi.
