What implications will climate change have for the region where you live? Will the number of extreme weather events increase – torrential rains, tornadoes, droughts …? Or maybe it will translate into milder temperatures? Now you have the opportunity to answer these and other questions yourself by participating in weatherathome .
It is an experiment that takes place within the framework of the British project climateprediction.net, which since 2003 has been recruiting Internet users all over the world. The novelty of the initiative launched this week with the collaboration of Microsoft research is that, for the first time, it uses regional climate models , which can create detailed predictions showing variations in temperature, wind, rainfall and snow. For now, three large areas that are especially sensitive to climate change are going to be modeled: the western United States, southern Africa and Europe.
To be part of the investigation, you only need to register at www.climateprediction.net, download and install the BOINC program, and give part of the time that your personal computer remains on to make calculations. The data is then sent over the Internet to researchers, who will analyze the information and develop the final climate models.
