A startup will sell lab-grown tiger fillets

The constant advancement of technology has allowed companies like Primeval Foods to grow laboratory meat from exotic animals. This UK-based startup aims to put all kinds of meat on our table: zebra, elephant, lion, giraffe or tiger.

The meat does not come from animals

They hope to replicate the dining experience by growing cells inside a lab, especially as lab-grown meat is increasingly on everyone’s lips as an emerging alternative to intensive animal farming , promising new ways to produce meat protein. of beef, pork or poultry, but without slaughtering them.

This company goes one step further and is developing exotic meats grown in the laboratory that can, according to Primeval Foods, new food experiences and health benefits. As with most lab-grown meats, the process still relies minimally on live animals.

These products could end up in our restaurants and supermarkets if they make it past FDA food regulatory checks.

The company’s press kit includes a mock tasting menu that begins with a cheese board and farmed giraffe hams and main course lion meat ravioli , with tiger nuggets on the children’s menu.

“We are currently working on: the Siberian tiger, the leopard, the black panther, the Bengal tiger, the white lion, the lion and the zebra,” Yilmaz Bora , managing partner of the parent company of Primeval Foods, told FoodNavigator .

Thus, pending regulatory approval, Michelin-starred restaurants will be the company’s first point of sale , followed by supermarkets.

It is not the only one on the market

The traditional selection of meats is seeing the emergence of companies that intend, precisely, to get out of the norm and opt for somewhat exotic laboratory-grown meats. Such is the case with Orbillion Bio, for example, a startup trying to bring lab-grown elk sausage and even Wagyu sashimi to market. The company plans to bring that product to market in 2023, although the company has not said how or given details about which market will be the main one.

There is also Vow, in Australia , which develops meat products cultured from a cell library that include meat from kangaroo, alpaca, turtle and lamb , among others. The company raised more than 6 million dollars (just over 5.52 million euros) at the beginning of 2021.
