Corona-Talk at Maischberger: Openings are not about "stupid, selfish consumption"

In their broadcast on May 12, “Maischberger. The week ”, Sandra Maischberger speaks to her guests about the corona vaccination situation in Germany, but also worldwide.

Berlin – The chef and restaurateur Nelson Müller and the two journalists Nicole Diekmann and Susanne Gaschke were present in Sandra Maischberger’s studio. Those present in the program “Maischberger. Die Woche ”on ARD announced their hope that social life in Germany would“ normalize ”in the foreseeable future with the progressive vaccinations against the coronavirus.

Nevertheless, some of Sandra Maischberger’s guests criticize the political leadership for their handling of the measures ordered in the corona pandemic. Nelson Müller, for example, lacks rigor. Why should it be possible and safe to go to a full supermarket or a fully occupied plane, but not to an “orderly restaurant situation”? As an entrepreneur, he notes, you are confronted with a lot of organizational issues in the current situation, but these are often ineffective. Without predictability and the lack of a correct opening strategy, you lose a lot of money and ultimately stamina.

The motivation of the population to adhere to the measures is decreasing, confirms Susanne Gaschke, author of the “Welt” at Sandra Maischberger. For more than a year one has lived in a climate of fear, but this means of scaremongering used by politics no longer works. People are not interested in stupid, selfish consumption when, for example, they want restaurants to be opened up. Rather, stopping at restaurants and doing this together with others is simply part of our culture. Gaschke lacks an active policy on the part of politics in dealing with the containment measures. Nicole Diekmann, ZDF’s capital correspondent, agreed with her. The people’s hopes of being on the verge of being able to resume a “normal” life have burst several times. The willingness of the people to support the measures is decreasing.

But the journalist also points out in the talk show Sandra Maischberger that it is not expedient to always argue with the number of actual or expected deaths. Personally, she does not want to end up in the intensive care unit and certainly not get sick with Long Covid. It is important to recognize the current progress, namely falling numbers of infections and fewer people in the intensive care unit. You have to remain cautious, but you can be happy about everyone vaccinated. Because every vaccinated person makes society a little safer, argued Gaschke. Prof. Leif Erik Sander from Charité Berlin, who was included in the program, was able to underpin this optimism. Even if the current declining numbers cannot yet be traced back to the progressive vaccination of the population, a decisive improvement can be expected by the summer.

Sandra Maischberger: The desire to open up is not stubborn, stupid consumption

The current successes can still be attributed to the lockdown measures, which are still needed when you have reached a vaccination rate of 50%. Then you will be able to open it gradually. A vaccination rate of 70 to 80% is required for a complete opening. Sander also gave the cautious all-clear with regard to the risk of infection that emanates from the vaccinated and affects the vaccinated. Even if vaccinated people could fall ill again in a few cases, as Sander emphasized, the course of the disease was different and milder. Vaccination also offers protection against long covid and mutations. “Germany should be out of the woods by summer,” Sander repeated again.

That was a clear positive signal that those present readily accepted. But the mood clouded the discussion that Sandra Maischberger had afterwards with Federal Minister Gerd Müller. She asked the CSU politician and Minister for International Cooperation what to think of the situation in India. Müller expressed himself reproachfully and visibly angry about the EU’s selfishness in dealing with vaccines. Even if this has been lost in the current development, Germany has been active since the beginning of the pandemic in India with the exchange of experts and also in laboratories. But in his opinion, the problem is clearly with obtaining the necessary vaccination.

Maischberger. Die Woche: Development Minister criticizes the EU’s selfishness in dealing with vaccines

There is a lack of solidarity, added the CSU politician at Maischberger. Five countries in the world, including the EU as a whole, would have got the majority of the vaccines available, while thirty had nothing at all. In Europe, they store five doses of vaccine per inhabitant, while other countries do not have one dose per person available. He was disappointed with the behavior of Brussels. He is working to ensure that funds are quickly freed up to support poorer countries such as India or South Africa. This specifically requires vaccination doses. He is therefore committed to promoting the Covax initiative, with which UNICEF wants to buy vaccines for others who cannot afford them, he said, and concluded in a voice that was quite emotionally charged, because fighting the pandemic was “a task of Humanity”.
