An integral part of this cult is the sketch “Dinner for One”, which has been on the screens on New Year’s Eve for over 50 years.
“Dinner for One” has been on TV for over 50 years
Butler James (Freddie Frinton) trips over the head of a tiger skin over a dozen times. This nonsense spectacle was filmed by NDR in 1961. The original author of this sketch is the Briton Lauri Wylie.
The TV classic ran for the first time on March 8, 1963, and thus had nothing to do with New Year’s Eve. Moderator Heinz Piper stepped in front of the audience and explained the only sentence that you really had to understand in the following sketch: “The same procedure as every year.”

Nobody suspected at the time that the show would one day become such a long-running hit. In the first few years, ARD and the third programs only showed the sketch when there were gaps in the program. In 1972, “Dinner for One” was broadcast for the first time on New Year’s Eve and from then on it was shown regularly at the turn of the year.
