Geology may not be a sport, but it deserves an Olympiad. This has been decided by the Association for the Teaching of Earth Sciences (AEPECT), the Spanish Society of Geology (SGE) and the Illustrious Official College of Geologists (ICOG), which have created the "I Spanish Olympiad of Geology" with the objective of bringing this science to all Spanish citizens, especially the youngest, who are responsible in the future for caring for our planet.
The territorial phase began in January and will continue throughout the month of February. The national phase, meanwhile, will take place on March 27 and 28 in Madrid and all the winners of the territorial phase (three per province) will be able to attend. This phase will consist of a first part in which the participants will demonstrate their knowledge by answering the questions posed in a gym that will take place at the Faculty of Geological Sciences of the Complutense University of Madrid. The contents of the questions will be adapted to those specified in the bases of the call.
In the second part, participants are invited to carry out different recreational activities, such as visiting the Geominero museum at the Geological and Mining Institute or taking part in workshops supervised by researchers from Atapuerca .
