I slept with an ET: the peculiar world of abductions

The aliens are conducting a genetic study and the human species itself is the subject of a breeding experiment. One of the purposes for which they come to Earth is to abduct humans and produce other beings. It is not a program of reproduction but of production: the goal of abduction is the creation of children .

The phenomenon of abductions, almost an epidemic during the last two decades of the last century, had its reflection on the small screen. From agent Fox Mulder from the television series The X- Files , who is brought back almost dead by aliens after inoculating him with an alien virus, to the miniseries produced by Steven Spielberg Taken , which chronicles the lives of three American families over four generations and united by their contact with extraterrestrials.

In the cinema, a film that raised some controversy was The Fourth Phase . Released in 2009 and directed by Nigerian filmmaker Olatunde Osunsanmi, it starred Resident Evil zombie-slayer actress Milla Jovovich. The film takes place in the town of Nome, Alaska, and it is stated that it is based on real events because, according to what is said in the film, a disproportionate number of alien abductions have taken place there during the last forty years. The film tells the story of psychotherapist Abigail Tyler, played by Jovovich, and alternates dramatization with allegedly real footage from the real Tyler’s files. The film shows how patients with sleeping problems were visited by beings from another planet who are described as owls and who speak in the ancient Sumerian language.

But the film is entirely fictional and was heavily criticized for using the names of real people missing from that Alaskan town. Because in Nome, luckily, aliens do not roam freely.

The abduction phenomenon was born on September 19, 1961 when the interracial marriage of Barney and Betty Hill thought they were being followed by a light moving through the sky . According to what they said, to avoid her they decided to take a detour through secondary roads arriving at her house two hours later. Then Betty started reading UFO books and having nightmares. Concerned, they went to the psychiatrist Benjamin Simon and, under hypnosis, told a terrifying story: they had been subjected to a medical examination in a flying saucer and, after having their memory erased, they were released.

The Hills case would not have made it out of the psychiatrist’s file had it not been for the pen of tabloid journalist John G. Fuller who published the book Journey Interrupted five years later. This best-selling book defined what from then on were going to be the necessary ingredients to recognize an abduction: extraterrestrials performing medical practices, a secondary road, lost time, erased memory…

The abductees are not sick in the head

The truth is that if the abductions are true and we pay attention to the numbers used by those who defend their reality, the aliens have kidnapped around 100 million people . Is it credible that such a mass kidnapping program could go completely unnoticed by everyone? As Carl Sagan quipped, “it’s surprising that most of the neighbors haven’t even realized it.” And all this without the slightest physical evidence of the existence of abductions.

We might think that those who claim to have contacted aliens suffer from some psychopathology, but the truth is that different psychological studies show the opposite. However, these works do reveal certain personality traits that seem to be characteristic of those who suffer from them. The abductees are usually very inventive, creative and original people : it is what in psychology is called fantasy prone or prone to fantasy. Apparently, around 4% of human beings show this peculiar personality trait.

But is that all? Can you imagine what has happened and that’s it? No, things are not that simple. Because to know if you have been abducted you must undergo hypnosis . The reason is simple: in addition to kidnapping and experimenting on you, the aliens erase any memory of what they did to you. But the poor are not very good at doing it because those memories are buried in the subconscious and only under hypnosis can they be brought to light. And here’s the quiz of the matter: We’ve known since the 1980s that under hypnosis our brains make memories of things that haven’t happened . In fact, that is what could have happened to Betty Hill: first she started reading about aliens and then, under hypnosis, she ‘remembered’ being abducted by them.

There is also another characteristic shared by those who believe they have been abducted: they have a higher incidence of so-called sleep paralysis.

Abduction vs sleep paralysis

If you wake up and discover that you cannot move a muscle except your eyes, feel a presence in the room which also seems to be pressing on your chest preventing you from breathing, hear noises and notice electric shocks, you are suffering from one. Everything happens during the phase of sleep known as REM, characterized by rapid eye movement. It is at this time when we dream and during which our bodies are paralyzed , which is a good measure that our brain takes to prevent us from inadvertently hurting ourselves by moving in our dreams. But it can happen that the REM phase does not develop correctly and we wake up before the paralysis passes.

The consequent panic caused by this situation can be increased by hypnopompic hallucinations , which appear naturally on awakening, like that of a luminous being located at the foot of the bed. This terror is so vivid that it seems real .

Sleep paralysis happens to 30% of the population and 5% of those who have had it is accompanied by visual, tactile and auditory hallucinations. Now, we should not worry that we are going crazy: sleep paralysis is as much a symptom of psychiatric problems as hiccups can be . However, the human being must seek an explanation for what has happened to him and that, for him, has been completely real. And there we have the aliens; others see vampires, thieves, or ghosts of dead relatives.

Of course, such an explanation does not satisfy either ufologists or abductees. Both of them want to believe that there is a kind of alien pogrom against humans where they engage in rape, extract eggs, suck semen and insert rectal probes, among other medical experiments. This interest of the extraterrestrials for sex and not for purely human faculties and not shared by the rest of the species on this planet is striking. And, curiously, all this sexual history of aliens and humans originated in a country that is a paradigm of puritanism and sexual double standards , something that should give us a clue as to where these supposed ETs come from: from inside our heads.
