Can there be life on other worlds? For Laura M. Parro, geologist and researcher, it is the million dollar question: “Whoever answers it will win a Nobel Prize or something similar,” she smiles, convinced.
We know more or less when the Earth formed, but we don’t really know how. If we find life on other worlds, that will also give us clues about how it developed on Earth.
There are billions of stars, each with one or more planets, each with one or more moons. Life could thrive on these planets or satellites: “If we have already found about 4,000 planets, some with similarities to Earth, the chances of there being life on any of them are very high, ” says Laura.
In addition, this life can be very difficult to imagine, because it can be very different from what we know: “There may be life based, for example, on methane. Why not? But it may still be very difficult to find it.”
About Laura Parro
Laura Parro, graduated in Geology and current pre-doctoral researcher in Planetary Sciences at the Complutense University of Madrid, combines her research and teaching work with scientific communication. He has investigated such interesting celestial bodies as the satellite of Jupiter Europa, or the dwarf planet Ceres, although his current research focuses on the analysis of the thermal state and the characterization of the crust of the planet Mars.
He has received important scholarships in his area and has carried out numerous scientific outreach activities in very different formats: radio, television, fairs, contests, monologues and videos on YouTube (Viajando por Planetas).
His intervention in Homo Curiosus, the scientific event of the year, focused on exoplanets, and the probability that life exists outside of Earth. In addition, when life on Earth is no longer viable, humans will have to find other places to thrive. To support his talk, the documentary Future Space: The Mystery of Extraterrestrial Life was screened.
Documentary Space Future: The Mystery of Extraterrestrial Life
“The human race will have to leave Earth if it wants to survive.” The conquest of space has begun, and according to Stephen Hawking it is the only chance for humanity.
are we alone in the universe? It is a fascinating and disturbing question, whether the answer is positive or negative. Governments and private entities have invested millions in searching for extraterrestrial life in galaxies near Earth. Experts estimate that the discovery is around thirty years away. They have appeared in books, movies, and cartoons in many different ways. But what will they really be like? Can we get in touch with them? Do we really want to?
