London Mayor Boris Johnson has announced a series of measures to try to improve air quality in the city. Through an agreement with Transport of London (TFL) and the Environment Agency, a technology for the suppression of polluting particles will be tested. What system have the English come up with to alleviate this problem before the Olympic Games are held next summer?
It consists of a saline solution that acts, as if it were a glue, agglutinating the polluting particles (ash, soot, dust, metals …) to prevent them from entering the atmosphere. It will be spread on a trial basis from Tower Hill’s Waterloo Bridge to Kings Cross station and, if the method is effective, it will be rolled out to more roads in the London Borough. In this way, it is expected to reduce pollution between ten and twenty percent in a few months.
The campaign is completed with other types of measures such as the installation of particulate filters emitted by diesel engines in buses, planting trees on the city’s main avenues and eco-efficient driving courses for taxi drivers.
The countdown to the Olympics has started. Will Londoners improve their city’s air quality by the time the long-awaited event begins?
