Beijing (AP) – According to state media, twelve people were killed and 138 injured on Sunday in a gas explosion in a market hall in the central Chinese province of Hubei. The incident occurred around 6:30 a.m. (local time) in Shiyan city, the state broadcaster CCTV reported.

Among the injured, 37 were seriously wounded. The rescue work initially continued on Sunday evening. Around 150 people had been rescued from the rubble of the vegetable market by then, said the authorities of the Communist Party in the province.

The market hall was already filled with customers in the early hours of the morning. It collapsed after a loud explosion, reported the anti-government Hong Kong newspaper Apple Daily, citing an eyewitness. The pictures showed a field of rubble with broken concrete parts. Investigations into the cause of the explosion have been initiated, it said.
